At about 2 a.m. on Thursday night, Dr. Jeff Nazar heard a noise coming from the backyard next to his bedroom.
He didn't pay close attention to it, but a motion-detecting camera picked up the action.
"When we went back and looked at it in the morning ... we were like, oh my God — there's a mountain lion right there," Nazar said.
In the video, the bobcat is seen walking along a fence, and then jumps in the backyard pool area.
The home is located on Westfall Drive in Encino, fairly close to Ventura Boulevard. Nazar said the family has rarely encountered any wild animals in the past.
Nazar said the experience "was extra scary for us" because the family has a 2-year-old, a 4-year-old and a small poodle. The bobcat didn't appear to cause any damage.
"We're gonna be extra careful now, we usually let the dog and the kids roam around back there unattended, but I don't think we should," he said.
Correction: Wildlife ecologists identified the animal as a bobcat and not a mountain lion as previously stated in the article.
