Thief Crawls Under Tent to Take $10,000 from OC Japanese School Fundraiser

"It is so painful considering how much work people put in, especially the students," the school's chair said.

A brazen thief crawled under a tent and took approximately $10,000 during an Orange County school's fundraiser to pay for the institution's rent.

Orange Coast Gakuen Japanese Language School was hosting their annual food stand Sept. 2 and Sept. 3 when a thief used a trashcan as cover to crawl under a tent and take the school's fundraising money.

"He crawled underneath, which we had not thought about, and basically was able to take the bag" the school's chair, Bob Uriu, said.

The school has been holding its yearly fundraiser for 30 years and has never experienced anything like this theft.

"It is so painful considering how much work people put in, especially the students," Uriu said. "They were working for their school. To have that happen is just very tragic."

Orange County Police Department detectives are reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to identify the thief.
