Fourteenth District City Councilman José Huizar wants to form a Bringing Back Broadway Commercial Reuse Task Force that will bring together city agencies and departments to find ways to encourage investment in 1 million square feet of vacant commercial space along Broadway, reports blogdowntown.

The task force will bring recommendations to council within 60 days, and in a statement from Huizar’s office, duties include finding  “meaningful financial and program-based incentives for the consideration of a new ordinance.”  It adds  “The task force will be convened by the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency within 30 days and will include a wide variety of City departments and business leaders.”

"Unless the city does something to encourage the reuse of long-vacant commercial spaces, we'll be staring up at architectural ghosts all along Broadway," Huizar later said to a downtown-based newspaper.

The motion points to an 1999 Adaptive Reuse Ordinance shepherd by downtown Los Angeles developer Tom Gilmore that led $6-billion in new development.
