Legoland is growing brick by brick. Following its recent announcement to build a water attraction, the Carlsbad theme park won approval from the city to build a Lego-themed hotel.

The Carlsbad City Council approved the 254-room hotel outside the entrance to the park on the site of an existing parking lot. It will include a restaurant, bar, nightclub, entertainment stage, Lego clock tower, gift shop and a swimming pool, according to Examiner.com.

Before construction can begin, the plan must also win approval from the California Coastal Commission, which regulates construction along the state's coast.

Legoland hopes to continue the parks expansion and attract more tourists. Last summer, the park added a 36,000-square-foot, two-story aquarium that houses more than 200 species of sea life, according to the LA Times. In September, the park submitted plans to the city to build a 5.5-acre water attraction in the park's northern section.

Once construction begins on the hotel, park owners estimate it will take about 18 months to complete.
