Getting the Tax Credit You Deserve

The United Way of Greater Los Angeles is leading the charge to make sure all eligible taxpayers know about the earned income tax credit and how to get their taxes done for free.

The United Way is working with the city of Los Angeles, L.A. County and private businesses in this EITC Partnership Campaign.

Families earning less than $42,000 or individuals earning around $38,000 or less may be eligible for the tax credit.

"Depending on the family size, the earned income tax credit could bring you up to about $4,800 in return, which is great, especially in this time," said Alicia Lara, Vice President of Community Investment for The United Way of Greater Los Angeles.

But Lara adds the only way to get the tax credit is to make sure you file a tax return, even people who think they didn't earn enough money in 2008 to file taxes.

The partnership wants to make sure everyone who does qualify gets the credit, so it is also providing free tax filing services at more than 100 sites around the county.

"It's really important for families to take advantage. If they don't, it's like leaving money on the table," Lara said.
