We love to hate the DMV. Home of surly clerks, sterile offices, bad drivers license photos, and now, even longer lines.
According to a report released by the Senate Office of Oversight and Outcomes, the average wait time for walk-in customers at Department of Motor Vehicles offices has increased from 27 to 45 minutes. Oh joy.
The increase, according to a legislative review sited by the LA Times, is the latest result of government ordered furloughs. Less employees equals less service.
But some government officials say the delay is unnecessary. Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) told the Times furloughs do not save the general fund money because the DMV is financed mostly by federal funds and fees charged to motorists.
"One of the governor’s biggest achievements that has made life a little easier for Californians was reducing long lines at the DMV and improving their services. Now without saving any money from the state’s budget, he has single-handedly wiped out those effective improvements," Steinberg told the Times.
