Amgen Race Draws Elite Cyclists to San Diego

Some of the most elite cyclists pedaled through San Diego County on Sunday as part of the Amgen Tour of California.

The tour started at 11:30 a.m. at Mission Bay’s Ski Beach and wrapped up around 3:40 p.m.

Between the start and finish, the riders pedaled themselves 108 miles through several parts of San Diego County. They first headed south to the first of two sprint locations in Imperial Beach before heading east towards the lone major climb of the opening stage, a trek up Honey Springs Road to see who is King of the Mountain.

Other notable spots on the path included Balboa Park, the Coronado Bridge and the Gaslamp District.

In its entirety, the race runs nearly 800 miles across California’s most scenic spots. It will wind down next Sunday in Sacramento.

No major highways or interstates in San Diego County were impacted by the race, as it zipped through surface streets.

The race took place in Escondido and Rancho Bernardo in 2009 and again in Escondido three years ago.
