A former top cop, who was hired by the city of Oakland to help make major changes to a city having major problems with crime is speaking out for the first time.

Former LAPD police chief and now consultant Bill Bratton held a news conference Wednesday at police headquarters.

He says bringing down the number of homicides, robberies and burglaries are his top priority.

Bratton also says that will be tough when you have a police department that needs a lot more police officers.

“It’s a department, I’m sure you can appreciate, is severely under staffed. And when you have such a small department for a large and vital city it’s important to focus those officers appropriately,” Bratton said.

Bratton will be working alongside Thomas Fraizer who was appointed on Monday by a federal Judge to be a compliance director in the city of Oakland.
