9 Injured in Border Patrol Chase That Ended in Crash: CBP

The pursuit appears to be regarding a case of human smuggling

Nine people - one of whom is in critical condition - have been injured in a one-vehicle crash at Lake Morena County Park not far from the border, according to the Border Patrol.

There were eight Mexicans and one American in an SUV that was being chased by the Border Patrol, officials say.

The crash happened at approximately 12:05 p.m. on Sunday in Lake Morena, located south of Interstate 8, east of San Diego County and 20 miles north of Tecate.

“Just the fact that they wouldn't pull over made me realize something was wrong because I was in front of them for at least two to three miles,” witness Kathy Flores tells NBC 7. “They just kind of stayed behind me at a safe speed until we hit Lake Morena. Right down in town is when they hit it really hard, and that's when they went around me and the Border Patrol did as well.”

One patient suffered critical injuries. Six patients suffered moderate injuries and three suffered minor injuries, Sanchez said.

No Border Patrol agents were injured in the crash.
