Drakes Bay Oyster Farm Dismantling Complete

Point Reyes National Seashore can now work its way to returning to nature.

The National Park Service has completed demolishing Drakes Bay Oyster Co.'s buildings along the shore near Inverness, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

The former owner of the farm, Kevin Lunny, tried to fight the removal of his lease at the U.S. Supreme Court, but could not find a legal recourse to save the 80-year-old farm.

In addition to the clams and oysters still in the bay, there are also a few homes in the area to remove. Those families will be relocated by Legal Aid of Marin and the Park Service.

There are also oyster racks, lines, and other remnants of the farm to remove in the future, according to the newspaper.

A 40-year lease negotiated with Lunny's predecessor at the oyster farm in 1972 expired in 2012, and federal authorities refused to offer a new one, arguing that Lunny knew he was done when the lease was up.
