Multiple Earthquakes Rattle Imperial and San Diego Counties

Twenty four small earthquakes, the strongest of which was a magnitude 4.3 quake, rattled Imperial County starting early Monday and continuing on into Monday evening. 

The first quake, measured at a magnitude of 4.2, struck at 7:31 a.m. PT.

Seven other smaller earthquakes measuring magnitudes between 2.5 and 3.3 were also recorded within an hour of the 4.2 quake.

The epicenter is nearly 60 miles northwest of El Centro and nearly 100 miles southeast of Palm Springs, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Later Monday night, in the same area, at 8:23 p.m. PT, a 4.3 magnitude quake struck, followed by a 4.2 magnitude quake at 8:36 p.m. PT. 

Within the hour, seven other quakes struck in the same area. 

Throughout the day, at least 13 quakes struck in the Salton Sea. 

The quakes were felt as far away as Carmel Mountain Ranch and Scripps Ranch, according to responses posted to the USGS website.
