Human remains have been found in Pine Valley, San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies confirmed.
Deputies from the Pine Valley sub-station were called to Japatul Valley Road around 9:30 a.m. after hikers reported finding the remains in a nearby canyon.
Homicide investigators are looking into the manner of death.
The remains have yet to be identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's officer.
Officials said the remains have been there for a while - possibly even years.
The remains were found in Horsethief Canyon located in the Cleveland National Forecast south of Interstate 8.
