New Details Emerge About Prince's Philanthropic Efforts in Oakland

As the global community continues to mourn Prince, new details about his philanthropic efforts are reaching the Bay Area – a place where his charities had a profound impact.

Two of Prince’s charity efforts were focused in Oakand. In a recent sit down with CNN, political activist Van Jones revealed that the legendary musician was privately funding Green For All, an environment group which aims to push environmental change through the production and distribution of solar panels.

“There are people who have solar panels right now, on their houses in Oakland, California, that don’t know Prince paid for them,” Jones said during the interview.

The musician also apparently helped found #YesWeCode, an organization that helps underprivileged African-American youths learn job skills for the technology sector.

Since the Purple One’s death on Thursday, the Bay Area has joined a slew of cities paying tribute to the musician through film screenings, parties and even lighting up City Hall in a spectacular shade of purple.
