4-Year-Old Injured by Sharp Objects Scattered at Park

The discovery was made Wednesday at North Park Community Park after a little girl suffered a cut to her foot, San Diego police said

San Diego police officers roped off access to a public park in the North Park area Wednesday after a 4-year-old girl was injured by multiple sharp objects found scattered around the park.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said the little girl's father reported that she suffered a cut to her foot after stepping on one of the sharp objects discovered at North Park Community Park on Idaho Street around 2:20 p.m.

The girl's father looked around the area and found eight more objects, and then immediately called police.

When officers searched the park, they found up to a dozen sharp objects strewn about the area. Police described the objects as possible "cable protective plates."

Officers closed off the park, including the playground area, and continued their search using metal detectors. The park reopened shortly before 5 p.m. At this point, police have not determined if the objects were intentionally planted in the park.

This isn’t the first case of its kind in San Diego County.

This past July, officials temporarily closed Harvest Park in Chula Vista after more than 30 razor blades were found in the grass – some with the blade side facing up – in what appeared to be an intentional act.

Other parks around San Diego have been the targets of similar crimes involving razor blades, including Bonita Cove Park, which has been hit several times since August 2013.

In May, police installed a security camera at that Mission Bay-area park in an effort to deter the unknown suspect responsible for intentionally planting razor blades there.

In the case of Bonita Cove Park, San Diego police have said the investigation is difficult because the incidents are often spread out, with months between each. Investigators do not know, at this point, if any of these cases are connected.
