Police Say Girl, Mother Surviving Hit-and-Run Crash on Highway 24 a “Miracle”

Police are calling it a miracle.

A 24-year-old woman and her daughter were struck by a hit-and-run driver after they tried to run across a major highway that runs through Orinda. Police said they suspect the mother was drunk.

Shuaniya Rogers on Monday was traveling eastbound on Highway 24 near the St. Stephens Drive exit when she crashed her minivan in the center divider. Police said the mother suspected of driving under the influence made another bad decision after the collision.

"She decided she was going to leave that scene and walk across all the lanes of Highway 24, where she was ultimately struck by a Mercedes Benz," CHP Officer Johnn Fransen said. "There's no doubt in my mind this is nothing but a miracle the child survived and that the mother survived."

The vehicle that struck Rogers and her child kept going, police said.

When police arrived on scene they found an empty car, but one officer heard a baby cry.

"He heard some noise that ultimately drew him over to the right shoulder," Fransen said. "That's when he noticed the small child. Once they went over there they saw the mother."

One of the officers noticed the toddler's badly injured foot and provided aid.

"So right now there will probably be a complaint to be filed for both driving while intoxicated as well as child endangerment," Fransen said.

Rogers and her daughter are in the hospital recovering from what police said could have been a fatal crash. Police are still looking for the driver of the Mercedes Benz involved in the hit-and-run.
