SF OKs Ballot Measure That Would Allow Noncitizens to Vote in School Elections

San Francisco officials are taking another try at giving noncitizens the right to vote in local school board elections.

The ballot measure approved by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Tuesday would allow parents and caregivers of city public school students to vote in local school elections. The measure will be on the November ballot.

San Francisco voters rejected the proposal in 2004 and 2010, but Supervisor Eric Mar said anti-immigrant statements by presidential candidate Donald Trump may prompt higher turnout by Latinos and other immigrants this fall.

Supporters of the idea say parents and caregivers should have a say in their children's education, even if they are not U.S. citizens or are in the country illegally.

Opponents say voting is a right that should be reserved for citizens.
