Salmon, Deflategate and Silicon Valley's “Pied Piper”: Bay to Breakers Takes Over San Francisco

The 2015 Zappos Bay to Breakers got rolling with a cloudy yet festive start early Sunday morning, with participants dressed up as everything from salmon to Deflategate to the fictional start-up "Pied Piper" from the HBO show "Silicon Valley."

At least 50,000 people participated in the race, which has been taking place in San Francisco since May 1912 and is the oldest consecutively run footrace in the world. The 12K race starts near the San Francisco Bay, a few blocks from The Embarcadero and ends at the Great Highway near Ocean Beach.

The Men's Elite division winner was Isaac Mukandi Mwangi with a time of 35:25 and the Female's Elite division winner was Jane Kibii with a time of 40:04, organizers said Sunday.

Race organizers said they implemented a zero tolerance policy during Sunday's Bay to Breakers: alcohol and wheeled devices (including floats) were not allowed on the race course and violators were removed immediately without any refunds.

Thousands took Caltrain and BART to get into San Francisco to make the start of the race.

Police arrested 11 people during the race, including five on suspicion of felonies, three on suspicion of misdemeanors and three on suspicion of being drunk in public. Medical crews responded to 14 medical calls and police said 10 people were treated at sobering centers.

Police said the arrest numbers are subject to change.
