San Diego Police Investigate Man's Traffic Stop Death

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man detained by San Diego police officers on Sunday morning.

The man was questioned by officers after he was spotted at the USA gas station, 2205 Morena Boulevard, appearing to be intoxicated with open alcohol containers in his vehicle’s center console area, according to a news release from the San Diego Police Department.

Officers questioning the driver at about 10:30 a.m. smelled alcohol on his breath and detained him outside the vehicle for questioning, police said.

After about three minutes, the driver began to vomit and have trouble breathing, police said.

Officers performed first aid on the man and requested help from medics. However, he was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he died a short time later, the news release said.

Homicide detectives were called in and will conduct an investigation and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

The man’s name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
