Youngest California Delegate at RNC is 22-Year-Old Berkeley Student

Out of thousands of delegates participating in the Republican National Convention this week, UC Berkeley student Claire Chiara stands apart.

At only 22-years-old, Chiara is the youngest out of 341 delegates and alternates from California -- but her resume looks like it could match up with the best of them.

In addition to doing some reporting for the student newspaper The Daily Californian, Chiara also ran her own campaign for District 15 representative in the California State Assembly. She's also the former president and chairman of UC Berkeley College Republicans and interned for the Republican National Committee last summer.

She told her former paper that she didn't mind losing in her Assembly race, so long as she inspired and prompted discussion about pressing political issues.

"Even if I don’t win the election, I truly hope to start a conversation and remind each and every constituent of Assembly District 15 that they can ask questions, and they can decide whether they are being truly represented," Chiara said.

She is lending her vote to Donald Trump at the convention. Unlike many of her peers at UC Berkeley, she has looked past some of his blunders, including comments about women that have since been criticized for being sexist.

Trump claims crime rates are soaring. The numbers indicate otherwise.

“He’s a businessman who cares about performance and results,” Chiara told UC Berkeley's news service. “He has a track record of hiring women. There’s an old quote of his about ... hiring anyone who can get the job done.”
