California's first lady, Maria Shriver, is taking a page from first lady Michelle Obama in announcing plans for an edible garden on the grounds of the state Capitol.

Shriver says the garden will demonstrate the important role of food and how it gets to the family dinner table. It will also emphasize water conservation, a huge issue in California.

Mrs. Obama last week joined schoolchildren to plant a produce and herb garden on the White House grounds.

Noted California chef Alice Waters had lobbied for a White House garden for more than a decade.

She partnered with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to plant a vegetable garden outside city hall last summer.

Shriver says Waters will also help build the garden in Sacramento. It will break ground in May.
