It is a silent killer. Unless detected and treated it takes lives. But Los Angeles County is mounting a war to rescue women from cancer.

Breast cancer killed 41,000 women in 2005, and 12,000 others were diagnosed with cervical cancer in the latest statistics released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most at risk are women of color and those who are financially disadvantaged.

During this wave of job loss and fewer dollars, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is offering free breast and cervical cancer screening tests for low-income women with no health insurance. The Office of Women's Health will schedule a free Pap test, clinical breast exam and mammogram. Those tests are expensive without insurance, but are free to women who desperately need them and can't afford them.

All you need to do is dial 800-793-8090. You will talk to an L.A. county operator. They speak seven different languages and will make the appointment for you at a nearby health clinic. It's that easy.

Preventive health screenings help save lives. Call today to take a step toward better health and save your life or the life of someone you love.
