Trail Running: Three Great Trails to Experience Nature, Get Fit

Trail running picks up momentum as summer temperatures stick around

Even with extreme temperatures throughout Los Angeles, the trails continue to be a bustling hub for those getting interested in fit and experiencing nature. Trail running continues to empower people to walk, run and get fit throughout America. In Los Angeles we are spoiled with great trails throughout our city that lead to gorgeous views that many can only dream of.

Also, other runners have found that running on trails reduces the risk of injuries. The soft surfaces of the trail can help prevent and heal overuse injuries. It also uses different muscles than regular road running. With the many trails surrounding the LA area, make sure you take advantage of some of the following trails to soak in some outdoor adventure and experience a fun, easy way to get fit.

Make sure when you travel out to any trails to bring extra water. Hydration is the key when doing any type of activity. If it's cool when you start out on the trails make sure to layer your clothes. Enjoy the time with nature and some of the most scenic and uninhibited areas of Los Angeles

Temescal Canyon Loop: This is a very popular four-mile loop with great ocean views, a 1000 foot elevation change and an travels through a variety of different foliage. From Santa Monica, drive north on Pacific Coast Highway for 2.6 miles to Temescal Canyon Road and turn right. Drive to the end of Temescal Canyon Road and park at the entrance to the Presbyterian Conference Center. The trial head is at the far end of the parking lot on the left.

Franklin Canyon Loop: It's right in between the cities of Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It's a rare island of space that has great trails with forest views and city views.  From the 101 Freeway, take Coldwater Canyon Boulevard south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive. There is no street sign "Franklin Canyon." Road signs read "Road Closed 800 Feet" and "Sunset to Sunrise"; this is the park entrance. Do not make a U-turn for this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface to reach the Sooky Goldman Nature Center and continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles to reach the Franklin Canyon Ranch Site area.

Griffith Park to Mount Hollywood: This is a fire road that is great for beginner trail walkers and runners. With shady trees to rest at and the landscape holds lovely city views and a glimpse of the Hollywood sign on the mountain to the west. Take the Hollywood Freeway/101 and exit in Hollywood at Sunset Blvd. Take Sunset east to Western Avenue turning left and follow Western where it turns right becoming Loz Feliz Blvd. Turn left at Ferndell Drive and park near the Ferndell Nature Museum.
