A 25-year-old man who was shot while driving a Bentley Continental GT on a freeway near downtown has died, authorities said Monday.

The East Los Angeles man who shot several times while driving the $100,000 car was identified as Jose Luis Macias. He died Sunday at 1:40 p.m., said Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of the Los Angeles Police Department's
Central Detective Division detectives.

"We have not seen a freeway shooting in quite some time," Vernon said. "And this case really stands out in the number of rounds fired at the victim's car and the kind of car the victim was driving."

The recently purchased, silver-colored 2005 two-door was sprayed with at least 10 bullets about 3:35 a.m. Friday on the southbound Hollywood (101) Freeway, and the car came to a stop in the fast lane just east of the Los
Angeles River bridge.

A passerby, apparently a California Highway Patrol Officer, noticed the shot-up car against the median, broke out the driver's window and found the young man slumped over the steering wheel with several gunshot wounds, police
said.

Police said the car was not registered to the wounded man. Temporary registration papers were found in the car, but police would not identify the owner.

The car came from Dream Motor Cars on La Cienega Boulevard, but no one there would say who bought it, the Los Angeles Times reported.

No weapons or drugs were found in the car.

Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call police during normal office hours at (213) 972-1203, or anytime at (877) LAPD-24-7.
