Cover Your Ears, It's About to Get Loud in Long Beach

A B-1 bomber will roar into the skies from Long Beach Airport Monday, and residents under the flight path will likely feel it.
The bomber, in for some maintenance work since July, will definitely be heard as it flies over north Long Beach sometime in the afternoon. The big jet will use its afterburners on takeoff from the airport's 10,000-foot-long main runway, according to the Airport Authority.
This "will make it louder than the typical airport departure," the agency said.
Such a takeoff would likely be to the northwest, given prevailing winds.
Long Beach Airport operates under a noise abatement program, and residents are asked to report unusually-loud takeoffs.
The B-1 is a supersonic-capable, swept-wing jet bomber, and 67 are still in service for the U.S. Air Force.
