A man found dead in East Los Angeles Friday with burns on his body was being investigated as a possible homicide, according to the sheriff's department.

The victim, who was found in the 5000 block of Whittier Boulevard in East L.A. shortly after 9 p.m., was burned under suspicious circumstances, said Deputy Jeff Gordon.

It's unknown whether the man was burned to death or suffered the burns after he died, said Deputy Byron Ward.

"We know that he was a transient. He may have frequented the area," Gordon told NBC4.
