Guardianship Battle Continues in Beresford-Redman Case

Lawyers for the parents of former "Survivor" producer Bruce Beresford-Redman and his sisters-in-law Tuesday began discussions to try and settle who will get permanent guardianship of the couple' two children.

The children's paternal grandparents, David and Juanita Beresford-Redman, are the youngsters' temporary guardians. They want the guardianship extended and for their son to eventually have his parental rights restored.

However, the children's maternal aunts, Jeane Burgos and Carla Van Bastelaar, want Van Bastelaar to be awarded permanent guardianship.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff went into chambers with the lawyers to discuss a possible resolution, but Bruce Beresford-Redman remained with his father in the audience. He told the judge he did not mind being excluded from the talks in chambers.

"In the spirit of trying to reach a settlement, I'm comfortable with that," he said.

The body of his wife, Monica Beresford-Redman, was found in April in a sewer at the Moon Palace Hotel in Cancun, where the two were vacationing without their children. He returned to the United States before an arrest warrant was issued in that country, where he has been charged with his wife's killing.

Before the settlement pitch was made to Beckloff, he was scheduled to begin trial Tuesday to determine who gets permanent guardianship of Camila, 5, and Alec, 3.

Meanwhile, Beckloff postponed until Jan. 12 any future proceedings regarding which of two wills purporting to represent the intent of Monica Beresford-Redman is valid -- a 2004 document submitted by Burgos or another presented by the paternal grandparents and allegedly signed by their daughter-in-law in 2008.

The grandparents' attorney, Adrienne R. Hahn, said information is still being gathered in preparation for a trial regarding the wills. She also said the sisters' lawyers want to take Bruce Beresford-Redman's deposition.
