With about two weeks left before the country switches to digital television, Los Angeles residents were urged today to prepare for the switch from analog service.

The secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce joined Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Los Angeles, to remind residents that while digital TV may mean a clearer picture and more programming options, it also means that Angelenos need to make sure their television sets are ready.

Anyone with a TV connected to cable, satellite or a paid service are ready for the digital transition. However, residents who use rooftop antennas, over-the-air service or rabbit ears will lose service on June 12. Those residents must subscribe to a paid service, buy a TV with a digital tuner or purchase a converter box in order to continue watching their television.

"If you need help toward the purchase of the converter box, I urge you to apply for a coupon before June 1 to ensure you receive them before the switch. Eligible households can receive up to two $40 coupons, which cover most of the cost," said Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.
