Disney's Star Tours to End Endor Stop

A long time ago in a Disneyland not so far away, Star Tours opened to the public. On July 27th, the ride will close to make way for an updated attraction, according to sources.

Disneyland Parks is planning to overhaul the Star Wars rides at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida, according to Gadling.com. The new "Star Tours II" attraction will be a 3-D ride based on the pod racing sequence from Star Wars: Phantom Menace. It's expected to open in May 2011. A video on YouTube (see below) purportedly shows a sneak peak of the new ride.

Star Tours opened January 9, 1987 at a cost of $32 million. Disney partnered with George Lucas to create the travel-to-Endor-themed ride. Disney purchased four military-grade flight simulators to build the motion platforms that move guests in sync with the first-person film created by Lucas and the special effects team at Industrial Light and Magic. The ride was duplicated at Disneyworld and opened December 15, 1989 in Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Walt Disney World and a Star Wars fan club will be holding a "Last Tour to Endor" wrap party, Gadling.com says, complete with a "Death Star Disco" on August 14 before the Disneyworld ride closes.
