Former Trojan Everson Griffen Tased and Arrested

NFL player arrested blocks from USC campus

Former USC Trojans defensive end Everson Griffen was arrested Monday evening after police used a Taser to subdue him after he allegedly assaulted a police officer during a routine traffic stop.

Griffen, who played at USC from 2007-2009 and currently plays for the Minnesota Vikings, was stopped near 30th and Hoover streets blocks away from USC campus about 4 p.m., said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Karen Rayner.

“While conducting their investigation, he became uncooperative and tried to run from officers,” said Rayner. “When officers caught up to him and a struggle ensued, he assaulted one of the officers and a Taser was used to subdue him and take him into custody.”

The Daily Trojan reported that Griffen did not have a valid I.D. on him and that was the initial reason why he fled.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Griffen ran because he said he did not want to go back to jail and when he was caught, he grabbed the officer in the groin.

TMZ reports that Griffen was also arrested this past Friday night in Hollywood, and booked for public intoxication, but was released on Saturday.

Rayner said Griffen will face a felony charge for assaulting an officer, but said he had not been booked “probably because he required medical treatment.”

Griffen had one other run-in with the law. In 2009, the then Trojan and college teammate Jordan Campbell were cited for noise violation in Nantucket, but no charges were filed.
