A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy was shot in the back Tuesday night during a gun battle in Lawndale.

The deputy was shot near 166th Street and Prairie Avenue at 10:30 p.m. in the street gunfight.   It happened after deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call of a domestic disturbanc.  It is not clear what actually led up to the shooting.

The shooting suspect tried to flee the scene but was confronted by assisting deputies and shot after pulling a gun on lawmen.

The wounded deputy was shot in the shoulder.  He was transported by ambulance to Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Carson and released early this morning. The, as yet, unidentified suspect died at the scene.

Aerials images from thee Channel 4 news helicopter showed a massive police scene.

Law enforcement  established a huge perimeter around the shooting scene while deputies searched the area to make sure there were no other suspects.

Hawthorne Police and Gardena Police are joining with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department to investigate the incident.
