The results are in from the California Physical Fitness Test, and Los Angeles students are looking more physically fit than they did last year.

Los Angeles Unified School District saw improvements at all three tested grade levels. The results follow a statewide trend.

LAUSD 5th Grade 7th Grade 9th Grade
6 of 6 fitness criteria (2007-2008) 21.9 21.9 26.6
6 of 6 fitness criteria (2008-2009) 22.4 23.2 29.5
Statewide 5th Grade 7th Grade 9th Grade
6 of 6 fitness criteria (2007-2008) 28.5 32.9 35.6
6 of 6 fitness criteria (2008-2009) 29.1 34.1 37.9

"The percentage of students who are in the healthy fitness zone is increasing," said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell. "However, as a state we must continue to improve.

"National statistics show that today's children are twice as likely to be overweight than their counterparts of the 1980s. Teenagers today are three times as likely to be overweight as those in the 1980s. Our students must take responsibility for their fitness, health, and overall well-being so they can compete on the playing field, in the classroom and on the global stage."

The State Board of Education designed the program in 1996, requiring students in grades five, seven, and nine to take the physical fitness test.
