A candidate for the 36th District Congressional seat is calling on celebrities to take her "No Jet Pledge."
The idea is to reduce air pollution by limiting the number of private jet flights to and from Santa Monica Airport. Democrat Marcy Winograd sent a letter explaining the pledge to the governor, Steven Spielberg, Julia Roberts, John Travolta and Tom Cruise, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press.
"The health and well being of people in West L.A. should take precedence over convenience," Winograd told the Daily Press. "I don't know of any organized efforts to reach out to the people who are actually using these jets so I thought it's certainly worth a try."
Winograd suggests the celebrities land at other airports, such as Van Nuys.
Her proposal comes after the City Council on Tuesday directed city staff to call on regulatory agencies to address concerns about air quality and the use of private jets.
The Daily Press reported that Winograd has not received a response since sending out the pledge on Monday.
Asked what he thought of the idea, the airport's manager said, " "It's an interesting concept I've really never heard of before. Anyone can ask anyone to do anything."
The 36 District seat is currently held by Jane Harman.
