MLK Hospital to Front South LA Biomedical District?

There's already been reports about new neighborhood projects coinciding with the reopening of MLK hospital in the Willowbrook section of South LA (should happen in a few years).

Now, the Los Angeles Business Journal fleshes out the plans, which seem to center around the establishment of a biomedical/biotech district a stone's throw from the hospital: "The Urban Land study specifically envisions Wilmington Avenue east of the hospital transformed into a tree-lined boulevard with wide sidewalks, and retail and office development.

The boulevard also would serve as a southern gateway to the MLK and Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, which recently launched a bioscience degree program.

As for the hospital site, the new MLK [medical center] would be surrounded by outpatient clinics and ancillary buildings, allowing the old hospital to be torn down or renovated for potential private development. That could allow much of the current 38-acre campus to be reconfigured for companies."

The richest person in LA, Patrick Soon-Shiong, has expressed interest in moving his new biotech company to the area, which is located near the 105 freeway, as well as the Green and Blue lines. The next step will be the County completing a master plan on the site.
