Recovering from Bicycle Accident, L.A. Mayor Resumes Schedule

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa broke his elbow during a bicycle accident on Saturday, according to reports in The Los Angeles Times.

Villaraigosa was riding in the bike lane on Venice Boulevard in Mid-City in the early evening when a cab pulled out in front of him. The mayor hit the breaks and fell off his bike.

Villaraigosa was taken to Ronald Reagan/UCLA Medical for his broken bone and was later released by 10 p.m.  He spent the remainder of the night resting at Getty House.

"The surgery was a success and the mayor is expected to make a full recovery," the mayor's spokeswoman, Sarah Hamilton, wrote in an e-mail to City News Service. "Mayor Villaraigosa will make every effort to resume a full schedule this week."

The mayor appeared Monday morning at an event to introduce his girlfriend's charity that helps animals and at-risk youth. The Lu Parker Project organized young volunteers to repaint the lobby of the city's South Los Angeles Animal Shelter.

In recent months, there has been an increase in calls to the city from advocates urging officials to make bicycling safer by providing additional bike lanes.
