A bomb squad sent to the Port of Los Angeles after a construction crew dug up a military shell determined that the object was not live ammunition, a port spokeswoman said.
"The shell was inert" and did not pose a danger to the public, said Lori Kelman of the Port of Los Angeles.
The shell was unearthed near Berth 49, off Miner Street, about 1:30 p.m., Kelman said.
The discovery did not affect port operations, but the area near where the object was found was evacuated, said Kelman .
Police and fire department units were sent to the scene, along with an LAPD bomb squad, she said.
Kelman had no further information about the type of military shell that was uncovered.
She did say that the area where the object was found was part of Fort MacArthur. The fort was formally created in 1914 and served as a training facility in World War I. It's unclear if the area is still being used by the military.
