Reese Witherspoon Receives Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Witherspoon's new movie "How Do You Know" comes out Dec. 17

Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon received the 2,425th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, 16 days before the release of her latest film, "How Do You Know."

Oscar-winning James L. Brooks, who directed and wrote the script for "How Do You Know," was among those joining Witherspoon at the ceremony in front of the W Hollywood Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard.

Also on hand for the ceremony was the Chihuahua named Bruiser who appeared with Witherspoon in "Legally Blonde."

"When I was young and I would think about the Hollywood Walk of Fame, I would think about all the entertainers it recognized, and how each one was an exceptional talent," Witherspoon said. "It seemed like the achievement being honored was the fame and celebrity of the individual.

"What I understand now, after 20 years of making movies, is that the achievement is being part of a community of people -- often who have done this for generations -- who are the best at what they do," she said. "Whether it's the writers, who give us words, or the directors, who craft the stories, or all the incredible crew members, you join a tradition of people who collaborate to bring moments of light and joy into our lives."

Born March 22, 1976, in New Orleans and raised in Nashville, Tenn., Witherspoon won the 2005 best actress Academy Award for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in "Walk the Line." She also won Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for the performance.

Witherspoon's other best-known roles include Elle Woods, the fashion merchandising major who decides to become a law student to follow her ex- boyfriend to Harvard in "Legally Blonde," student body presidential candidate Tracy Flick in "Election," and Becky Sharpe in "Vanity Fair."
