Son Held in Mothers Murder

Man confesses to murdering mother

A young Maywood man who told Huntington Park police he butchered his mother and put her body in a freezer -- and apparently did -- was behind bars Saturday.

"The body does appear to have been dismembered to some extent," Lt. Brian Elias of the coroner's office told City News Service.

The suspect was later identified as Moises Meraz-Espinoza, 19, said Sgt. Diane Hecht of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

Hecht said Meraz-Espinoza was booked on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail.

The suspect went to the police station in nearby Huntington Park and allegedly confessed to an officer or detective there yesterday, sheriff's deputies said. Police there brought in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which provides police services in Maywood under contract to that city.

"This afternoon about 1 o'clock, a male about 20 years old walked into a local police department here and said that he had murdered someone and that the body was at the location," said sheriff's Lt. Mike Rosson.

Neighbors told broadcast outlets the two shared the apartment where the body was found.
