Sunset Strip Gets First Facelift in 75 Years

The project is expected to take six months to complete

Much like the Hollywood stars who frequent it,  the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood is getting a makeover.

City officials will gather Wednesday for a groundbreaking ceremony of the famous stretch of road's first facelift in 75 years. The ceremony is slightly delayed, since some work actually began on the $5.4 million project at the beginning of the year.

The six-month project will include roadway resurfacing with rubberized asphalt; replacement of broken and damaged sidewalks; traffic signal upgrades; landscaped medians; development of "tree districts"; sidewalk widening at Sunset Plaza; and pedestrian walkway improvements.

Even though the Strip is one of the region's most heavily traveled streets, the "Sunset Strip Beautification Project" will mark the first time the roadway has been repaved since it was converted from a dirt road to an asphalt street in the late 1930s.

"We are thrilled to begin this important beautification project on the world-famous Sunset Strip," said West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land. "This project will bring even more energy and excitement to the legendary Sunset Strip."

The project will improve the 1.6-mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard from West Hollywood's western boundary near Cory Avenue to the eastern border near Harper Avenue. The project will be implemented in three phases and should be complete in about six months.
