Surf's Up

A high-surf advisory is in effect.

A very large westerly swell will continue across the coastal waters of Southern and Central California on Wednesday, producing high-surf conditions along west-facing beaches through Friday. The highest surf is expected near the Ventura County line.

Along with the high surf, strong southeasterly winds will affect the coastal waters, producing a very large storm surge which is expected to produce coastal flooding in low-lying areas. The most likely time for coastal flooding will be a couple hours on either side of high tide.

In additional to the flooding, coastal areas with west and south exposures are also likely to suffer beach erosion and damage to piers.

The National Weather Service warns of dangerous rip currents on all beaches in the area through much of the week and says even the most experienced swimmers should stay out of the water. Rocks and jetties will be especially dangerous because waves can unexpectedly sweep someone into the water, according to the NWS.

The high-surf advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Friday.
