Hemet Fifth-Graders: 27 Percent Say They've Tried Alcohol

Hemet School District Survery Has Disturbing Results

People worried about teenage drinking may have to set their sights much lower.

The survey showed 27 percent of the preteens in fifth grade in Hemet admit to having tried alcohol and another five percent said they had smoked cigarettes. The survey was part of the California Healthy Kids Survey and it is a way to determine the health risks youngsters face.

While 56 percent of the students said they feel safe at school, 50 percent admit they had been bullied. Six percent admitted they had tried an inhalant such as glue and another 28 percent told the survey they had seen someone at school with a gun or a knife.

Nearly 1,100 students took part in the survey, which amounts to 69 percent of the fifth graders in Hemet disrtrict.

The good news from the survey is 71 percent of the students believe alcohol is bad for a person’s health and 92 percent believe cigarettes are very bad for them.
