1 Injured in South LA Funeral Shootout

One person was critically injured Wednesday during a shootout at a funeral service in South Los Angeles.

The shooting occurred around midday near 47th Street and Avalon Boulevard while a funeral was being held for Kumase Jefferson, 41, who was shot in a gang-related attack Aug. 15 in the Vermont-Slauson area.

Police said the shooting was apparently the continuation of a gang rivalry that has been raging in the South Los Angeles area in recent weeks.

Three people were taken into custody after a short pursuit, police said.

The shooting came as community members held a rally in South LA calling for peace.

“We live in fear,” said Betty Holland, the mother of a shooting victim. “We have domestic terrorists running around our neighborhood.”

Over the next two months rallies and marches will be held as part of what organizers call the Safe Communities Initiative.
