Car Bursts Into Flames Following Shooting That Left 1 Wounded

A wild scene that began with a shooting in Torrance ended with a vehicle erupting in flames in Lawndale, leaving one person wounded, police said.

The incident began when someone opened fire into a car with five people inside around 2:30 a.m. at Artesia Boulevard near the 405 Freeway in Torrance, according to the Torrance Police Department.

Police said the the driver of the vehicle then drove away and ended up at 173rd Street and Condone Avenue in Lawndale, where it somehow caught fire.

All five people were able to get out before the vehicle was engulfed. A 23-year-old man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound. He is expected to survive. A woman suffered injuries from shattered glass, police said.

The car was left charred along a residential neighborhood, which police said made it difficult to collect evidence. Several cars were damaged by the intense fire.

Police were investigating what led up to the shooting and how the fire started. No suspect information was immediately available.

Artesia Boulevard between Prairie and Ainsworth avenues was shut down during the investigation.
