“Suspicious” Van Backs Up Traffic Near LAX

Aerial video showed a bomb disposal robot shattering the back window of a "suspicious" white van

Commuters were stuck in traffic on the Century (105) Freeway near LAX Wednesday morning after police cleared what was described as a "suspicious" parked white van.

California Highway Patrol officers got a call about 8:40 a.m. from El Segundo police "regarding a bomb threat," officials said.

Aerial video showed a bomb disposal robot near the "suspicious vehicle." The robot blew out the rear windshield of a white van, shattering the glass.

The van had a large container of clear liquid with a hose and wires sticking out that looked suspicious, said Ramon Montenegro of the LA County Sheriff's Department. Officials have not yet found the owner of the van.

Authorities cleared the van and said the area was safe about 9:45 a.m., slowly reopening lanes of the 105 Freeway. Traffic was backed up on the 105 Freeway from the 110 to 405 freeways as a result of the closure.

Metro Green Line service resumed before 10 a.m.
