Freak Crash Kills Man, Leaves 2 Others Hurt on 118 Freeway in Chatsworth

Three lanes were closed in each direction on the 118 Freeway while crews worked to clear the scene.

A man was killed Tuesday when he got out of his disabled pickup truck, which was struck by a car, and he was then hit by a motorcycle on the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway in the Chatsworth area, authorities said.

The crash was reported about 5:50 a.m. at Topanga Canyon Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man, who was in his 40s, died at the scene, the coroner's office reported. His name was withheld, pending family notification.

According to the preliminary investigation, a pickup truck became disabled on the carpool lane of the westbound freeway and the motorist got out, the CHP reported. That's when a westbound car hit the pickup truck, and the impact pushed the truck into the man, who was flung over the center divider and into the path of a eastbound motorcycle, which struck him, the CHP reported.

The car driver and the motorcyclist were treated for injuries that were not believed life-threatening. Three lanes were closed in each direction on the 118 Freeway while crews worked to clear the scene.
