49-year-old Satnam Singh of Ventura was involved in three traffic collisions Wednesday, one of which killed 20-year-old Nick Haverland.
Ventura police Wednesday night arrested the driver of a Hummer who was allegedly involved in three hit-and-run crashes, including one that killed a cyclist along Telegraph Road.
Police told NBC4 LA the suspect drove the banged up Hummer to his home, not far away from the crime scene, and holed up in his house. After a short standoff Satnam Singh, 49, surrendered to police.
The dead cyclist was not identified but eyewitness Joan Burroughs said, "I was talking to the other boy that was with the deceased and they were on their way to Ventura College to take their last finals for the summer and then the deceased boy was headed off to college...to university in September."
Friends of the victim told NBC4 LA that he is a graduate of Foothill Tech High School.
The first hit-and-run crash occurred at about 6:50 a.m. when the Hummer struck a woman and her 13-year-old daughter in a vehicle. Authorities said the Hummer then hit a truck that was stopped at a traffic light.
"The suspect kept driving and, approximately a quarter mile away, he drifted into the bicycle lane," Commander Al Davis. "He struck a bicyclist and killed him instantly."
Witness Nancy Crawford called 911.
"The impact was so hard," Crawford said. "It was awful."
Four other victims suffered minor injuries.
