Mother Accused of Throwing Child From Parking Structure

"There was no emotion, she's been described as stoic, very non-emotional"

Police arrested the mother of a 7-month-old baby boy critically injured after being dropped from the second story of a parking garage at Childrens Hospital-Orange County.

Sonia Hermosillo, 31, was arrested by an Orange police patrol officer near CHOC at 10:15 p.m., officials said.

"There was no emotion, she's been described as stoic, very non-emotional," said Sergeant Dan Adams with the Orange Police Department.

Cristina Madrigal, who used lived near Hermosillo for 2 years, finds all the news hard to comprehend.

"It's terrible, it's terrible.  I am surprised", said Madrigal.

The child remains hospitalized in critical condition. The circumstances of his injuries remain under investigation.

“Obviously, a baby can't climb over a railing, so something did happen,''  said Orange Sgt. Dan Adams. "We're certain this was done on purpose in an attempt to harm or kill that baby."

The woman's husband contacted La Habra police to report that his son and wife were missing. La Habra police contacted Orange police, who determined that Hermosillo's vehicle matched the one seen in surveillance video from the parking structure.

An officer saw the 2000 Chevy Blazer near Children's Hospital and stopped Hermosillo. An empty child seat was in the SUV, police said.

"It's just a horrible, horrible crime," said Adams. "We're just hoping that child is able to pull through."

The infant is at UC-Irvine Medical Center intubated and not breathing on his own.

Hermosillo, is being held in the medical ward at Orange County jail and will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.  She is being held without bail and also on an INS hold.
