Thousand Oaks High School Quarterback Found Dead

School officials suspect alcohol poisoning

A backup quarterback for the Thousand Oaks High School football team has died and school officials suspect alcohol may have been involved.

Griffen Kramer, the son of former NFL quarterback Erik Kramer, was found dead at a friend's house on Sunday, the Ventura County Star first reported. The 18-year-old died in his sleep, said the school's principal Lou Lichtl in a statement obtained by NBC LA.

"He reportedly went to sleep and did not wake up. Although the cause of death isn't official, initial indications suggest his passing was due to alcohol poisoning," wrote Lichtl.

Griffen Kramer transferred to Thousand Oaks from Agoura High School before his junior year, wrote Lichtl.

The Chicago Bears, Erik Kramer's former team, sent condolences to the Kramer family via Twitter.

"LM: Very, very sad news: Ex #Bears QB Erik Kramer's 18-year-old son, Griffen, passed away Sunday. Our thoughts & prayers are with u, Erik," wrote the team.

Grief counselors were at school on Monday.
