2 Brothers Dead After Shooting Near Playground at East Los Angeles Park

An investigation was underway after two brothers were shot and killed near a park in East Los Angeles Sunday, authorities said.

"My two brother-in-laws - they were inseparable," Ozzy Cruz, brother-in-law of the victims, said.

The two, identified by family members as Johnny and Tony Aguilar, were shot and killed near the basketball courts at Ruben Salazar Park in the 3800 block of Whittier Boulevard.

Johnny was 27 years old, and Tony was 34 years old.

The shooting was reported around 11 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses said a heavyset man and woman talking to the brothers at the park.

They then said that the man pulled out a gun and fired in the park full of people.

Witnesses said people scrambled for cover when they heard shots fired.

One of the brothers died at the scene and the other was transported to a hospital where he later died as well.

Family members told NBC4 that the two were both fathers; Johnny with three small children, and Tony with a 6-month-old newborn son.

"This isn't justice - this isn't fair for anybody," Cruz said.
