The owner of Glendora Hand Car Wash at the corner of Route 66 and South Vermont Avenue was tipped off when police tripped the shop’s security alarm in an effort to alert him.

The same witness who alerted police saw a man with a stocky build running northbound on South Vermont Avenue away from the scene, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez.

Police at first were unsure whether the men stabbed each other, but they are now searching for someone matching the description from the witness.

Deputies determined one of the victims used a wheelchair when they found the chair next to his body, Hernandez said.

Transients sleep in the car wash parking lot on a regular basis after closing time, said the car wash owner Mahmoud Hassan. The business is about 26 miles east of Los Angeles.

These are the first homicides in Glendora since 2009, Staab said.

The investigation temporarily shut down a stretch of Route 66.
