Man, 60, Gunned Down Outside Liquor Store

A shooting near South Los Angeles left a 60-year-old man dead, injured a 19-year-old man and shattered the window a passing vehicle that was carrying two children, sheriff’s deputies said.

Gunfire was reported at 8:25 p.m. Sunday near Firestone Boulevard and Beach Street in Florence, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said. Two men had been talking in front of a liquor store before two gunmen approached and opened fire, investigators said

The 60-year-old man, identified by relatives and friends as Gary Harris, an "activist" in the community, was struck by gunfire and later taken to the hospital, where he died.

"He's more like an activist, trying to keep people from following his old steps from gangbanging and drugs," said relative Ruby Acosta. "He was a good man."

The 19-year-old man was struck by one round in the upper body, according to the sheriff's department.

His injuries are not considered life-threatening. The man was identified by authorities as a gang member, and the shooting is believed to be gang-related.

Authorities also located three other victims nearby. The 32-year-old driver of a vehicle told authorities he was traveling on Firestone Boulevard with his two children, ages 4 and 1, when a bullet shattered his rear window.

None of the occupants were struck by gunfire, but the 4-year-old boy was cut by glass fragments. He was treated for a minor cut to his scalp, according to the sheriff's department.

No arrests were reported Monday morning.
